When it comes to setting your ideal physique goal, there really are no limits to what can be achieved with commitment, focus and a desire to succeed. These attributes mean little by themselves, however, so they must be harnessed as part of a comprehensive and manageable fitness plan that can deliver genuine results.

At the heart of this plan is the establishment of a realistic physique goal, which must guide your efforts and challenge you to remain focused during times of difficulty.

In this post, we will look at how to set an attainable goal and how this helps you to remain on the path towards superior physical fitness:

  1. Pay Attention to Time-frames

As we have already said, there are no real limits on the type of physique goals that you set yourself. Regardless of where you are starting from, even the most fanciful objective is attainable with the right attitude and hunger to succeed.

With this in mind, you may well be asking what we mean by setting a realistic goal? This really refers to your expectations in terms of time-frames, as more ambitious objectives will require far greater effort and a longer period of time to accomplish.

Let’s say that you are currently morbidly obese and aspire to reduce your body fat to an athletic 10%, while laying the foundations for a significantly healthier lifestyle. This type of goal cannot be achieved in a matter of weeks, so you must instead showcase patience and commit yourself for a sustained period of time if you are to succeed.

Small goals can be accomplished quicker, of course, but strive to remain realistic at all times and allow yourself the necessary time to be successful.

  1. Evaluate Your Circumstances and Resources

When you set a physique goal, it is also important to factor in your existing circumstances and the resources that you have at your disposal.

If you work 12 hours each day and have other commitments outside of the office, for example, you will need to schedule your activities around this and ensure that you allow longer to achieve your goals. Similarly, those who suffer with physical impairments will also need to make allowances for their circumstances, particularly when it comes to managing expectations and choosing manageable exercises that also deliver results.

In terms of resources, you may already be a prolific gym frequenter or have access to a personal trainer. As a result of this, you may be able to set more ambitious goals within a shorter time-frame, so don’t be afraid to account for anything that can help you to be successful.

  1. Work in Stages Towards a Final End Goal

Earlier, we touched on the example of someone who was morbidly obese and aspired to reduce their body fat to just 10%. While patience is key if you do aspire to achieve this or a similar goal, it may also be beneficial to work in stages as you move towards achieving a final, end objective.

In this instance, the first stage would require you to focus solely on losing weight you reached a healthy BMI (of around 22.5). Once this goal has been accomplished, you can concentrate more exclusively on refining your diet, increasing your intake of protein and building muscle. The more muscle that you build, you will find it easier to burn fat and see your body shape alter as a result.

Working in this way can make even the most ambitious objectives easier to achieve, while it also ensures that you do not damage your body by attempting to take on too much, too soon.
